stupidityThis documentary about stupidity tells us the history of the word “moron”, the difference between stupid, moron, smart, intelligent, genius and questions the regular practice of classifying peoples intelligence through standardized IQ tests. Of course also Mr. Bush is examined in this report. A well educated guy who, nevertheless, acts in a completely dumb way – or at least wants us to believe so.

Albert Einstein said:

“Only two things are infinite. The universe and human stupidity. And I am not sure about the former.”

Stupidity! – Documentary about stupidity in today’s society

BBC

In this documentary it’s said, that there is no movie about stupidity out there. I think this is not true. For example the movie “Idiocracy” pretty much meets this definition :-) On the other hand side there are movies made for dumb entertainment – like Jackass, which is now even available in 3D! Again, this does not mean, that either the creators nor the viewers have to be of low intelligence!

  1. Nice post. I agree, and I am reading more of your posts.

  2. ER

Ironicly, this film is edited exactly in the style it criticizes. It becomes a little overwhelming and tiring at times with it’s incessant dumbing down of every sentence by forcibly demonstrating every spoken sentence.

So, for example, if a person is talking about news reports now having a music track in their background, they edited a music track (well, 3 changing tracks) behind the speaker (as they did throughout every second of this film). Every word he says is accompanied by an visual illustration to demonstrate it: When he says “I was writing for a grade 8 level” you see a newspaper with the headline “grade 8 level”. When he says “They where terrified of alienating audiences”, there is a “Caution: may alienate audiences” title overlaid on top of the speaker, with a siren sound effect.

So very ironic that the movie about stupidity is edited for idiots… As for the substance? There are a few interesting anecdotes throughout the film, but as a whole, the concept is lacking, in my opinion.
