A film by the Immortality Institute that explores various aspects of artificial life extension including cryonics, caloric restriction, transhumanism, and other scientific pursuits of extreme life extension. With the scientific progress we see now the question raises: “Is immortality possible?

Will there be a time where everybody with enough assest available will be able to live forever? Can we really become immortal one day and conquer death?

Exploring Life Extension

  1. The documentary isn’t so much about the different techniques of immortality, more so about the morality behind it. The video provided no specific info, only speculations. Plus even though it appears to be from 2001 or 2002, it’s incredibly outdated.

  2. What about land the food…No one dies I guess no more babies then …Y run out of space . My be after we make to the stars . But then again the only people that will live for ever will be super rich……. Going back the stars……. So we kill this planet moving to two or more kill them and so on sounds like a virus and to y that think y can evolve to not destroying planets look around y …….. We are too stupid ……Most people should be place in front of TV feed sports and bull and made in to batteries……. feed them chips and burgers ……….when they get old grind them up on feed them to next batch stupbeings …..

  3. General Viewer- Not much here in details. It is mostly an overview of the concept of longevity.

Andrew – Over all I agree with what you said. 🙂

Kisinz – Don’t take offense but your argument is based on ignorance. The evidence shows that man does not act like a virus… most of the time. If your view was correct then the more advanced the society the WORSE its environment but evidence does not bare this out. Would you rather live in Paris or Shanghai? 1800 London (Where the smell from the Themes was so bad they had to close down parliament.) or modern day London? How about 1815 Pittsburgh (Where the smoke from coal furnaces were so bad some days you couldn’t see the city from a hill just outside of town.) vs the city today? The reality of humans is that we do tend to solve problems as long as we get correct feed back from our environment. In virtually every case where problems get to the point of disaster it is because those feed backs that were necessary for change were either not present of were blocked. Blockages are usually caused by some form of man made institution like Government or organized Mythology Worship (i.e. Christianity, Islam, etc.).

  4. Michael, I agree completely with your statement that we can solve these problems. The idea that we will run out of resources is a knee – jerk reaction. When you first ponder the issue of overpopulation, that is the first conclusion that you come to. After thinking for a while, you can discover that multi-level farming, better harvesting techniques, hydroponics and nutrient supplements can solve most of the issues we will face. The CO2 removal from our atmosphere is going to be the biggest challenge of our lifetimes.

  5. well we could live forever and sterilize ourselves but a few people who’s only job is to repopulate id be ok with that …..not having kids would be better than having to watch you kids die of starvation

  6. Nothing last forever! not diamonds, not the sun, not any computer, and certainly not life of any kind. be thankful and count your blessings, we don’t live forever.

  7. Great doc. I totaly agree with the general idea. I think we should do whatever we can, using todays technology, to try to live as long as possible. Nature doesn’t say it’s whrong, we do. We, apply out strict moral senses of what should be done, and what not, but this, as we seen throughout history, can change. WE SHOULD CHANGE

  8. HERE IS HOW I KNOW PEOPLE ARE SELFISH/EGOISTIC AND THAT IS WHY DEATH IS A PROCESS MAN MUST LEARN TO ACCEPT. FACT (1) NOT ONE HUMAN BEING KNEW HE WOULD EXIST UNTIL ALL THE SUDDEN HE SAW HIM OR HERSELF GROWING IN AN ORGANIC MACHINE HE CAME TO KNOW AS HIS OR HER BODY.(2)PEOPLE DON’T LEARN UNTIL THEY GO THROUGH SO MUCH THAT THEY QUIT BEHAVING THE SAME. EXAMPLE “WARS” READ A HISTORY BOOK. (3) EVEN IF PEOPLE LEARNED TO LIVE FOREVER THEY WILL EXPERIENCE THEMSELVES THE NEGATIVES OF IMMORTALITY AND UNTIL THEN LIKE “WARS” WILL STOP BEHAVING THE SAME. I ONLY AGREE WITH HEALTH DEVELOPMENT AND CURE TO DISEASE NOT THE IDEA OF LIVING UNTIL THE SUN BLOWS UP. FACT: IT IS A STAR, STARTS BLOW UP. WE ARE PUSHED/INFLUENCED TO FIND CURES THROUGH SUFFERING WHICH IS OK BUT THERE IS SUCH A THING AS LIMITS.

  9. Immortality…defying death. Here is what I think. Death does not make us human. To me being human is about improvement, constant pursuit of perfection, and pushing beyond our limits. We are organisms just like any other on Earth. What makes us special is our ability to think logically, using our brains to become the dominant species on the planet. Some say that defying death robs all meaning of life. We are talking about immortality not invulnerability. We can still die from a freak accident. Being immortal freakish accidents no longer are “freakish accidents” given time. This notion should give immortals respect for death and to value life because they have more to lose. People worry about living in tyranny and the nightmarish prospect of immortal dictators. I say to you that we will not remain on Earth for that long. We will soon colonize the stars. Even control freaks have limits to the range of their control. By then people can rise up, leave, and create whole new civilizations that they see fit. Some may say we will become nothing more than a plague that consumes resources from one place to another. If that is indeed what we will become, people seem to forget just how large the observable universe is let alone the universe beyond that and how long it would take to occupy and consume everything. At the end of the day we are curious folk. Driven by our constant need to conquer and understand the unknown. Given time, our petty difference, trivial pursuits for wealth and power will be a thing of the past. I truly believe that in the future we will not be humans, but a race of engineers that constantly pursuit knowledge and understanding of our physical universe. There are just too many wonders in the universe to witness to have limited time to exist.

  10. i can think of no other idea more terrifying than that of immortality. i ask you to watch “edge of tomorrow” and ask why the aliens let the humans win.
